In Hiding

This morning we built a fort. It seemed like the thing to do. Here are some tips I learned, it's been a while since I built a fort so I made some mistakes.
Lighter sheets are better than heavy blankets to make a roof.
Pillows are the brick and mortar of any good fort.
Furniture is your friend.

Parenting FAIL.
Today at Jack's doctor's appointment they measured him standing up instead of laying down. He is now 2 inches shorter than he was before. We shrunk him. I asked the doc to measure him laying down. He did not grow 1 millimeter. FAIL. Jack weighs 29 lbs. That's a FAIL for mommy's back. OUCH!

IRS FAIL.
I'm not shy about not loving government agencies (yes I'm still a Dem. in spite of this), especially lazy employees of said agencies. Well, the trained monkey who was inputting our 2007 tax data clearly took a lunch break in the middle of the job because the first half of our reportings were entered in right and the second half was essentially forgotten. About 2 months ago we got a letter from the IRS telling us that we could choose to pay the 2,500 we owe them upfront or over time. Um, no. So we resubmitted all our information with a cover letter and highlighted the areas that were skipped by this data entry orangutan. We just got a letter today saying we owe them essentially DOUBLE the original amount. Apparently whoever entered in our corrections also did not complete elementary school and is unable to properly use a keyboard. What this second person has done is essentially entered all out re-sent information as NEW capital gains information and they're trying to stick us with double the bill. I'm not saying the IRS sucks or anything, I'm just saying the IRS SUX. I mean how hard is it to COPY numbers into a data field?!?!

I used to have people because my Mom worked for a CPA firm. I love my husband, and he's good at math... but... we're going back to our people.

How did he shrink? I am confused! So how tall is he?

He was 33 inches, now he's 31.

How is that possible? Was the previous measurement inaccurate? Are they concerned? Am I being dumb by being so confused about this how can a kid shrink?

He was measured standing up at 31 inches and then they measured him again laying down, like the previous measurements, at 33 inches. The Nurse practitioner looked at his chart and thinks that the 15 month measurement (of 33 inches as well) was off on the highside. So he probably did grow a little bit from the last visit.

Oh ok, so he is still 33 inches. Gotcha! How come he is shorter when standing up? Well anyway I am glad he didn't shrink!

I have definitely heard before that the standing-up measurement is often lower than the "stretch" measurement. Since Seth's mom is coming into town today, we thought it was high time to hang the growth chart she made. On a side note, it turns out that her "inches" don't line up with real measurements (nice)...anyway, we tried to get B to stand up there but it hard to get him to keep his head up at the height where it would be accurate so he came out about an inch shorter than the 18-month measurement (lying down) had been.
