If only...

I think we all do this to some degree or another:

If only I was a size smaller...

If only I was married...

If only I had clear skin, more free time, less free time, could sew, had a maid... whatever.

We put these conditions on being happy, more relaxed or being allowed to buy new jeans.

Here's what I tell myself:
If only we had sold this friggin' house...
If only I didn't have the skin of a 14 year old boy...
If the kids were just a little older...
If I were on anti-anxiety medication...

... then life would be easier.

How dumb am I? Life isn't easy. And frankly if it were easy when things went our way it wouldn't be nearly as satisfying... it'd be like "I just won the lottery... must be Tuesday."

So here's my question: What do you tell yourself "If only..."

If you've never commented before or rarely comment I'd love to hear from you, just like I want to hear from my 'regulars'. Be honest!

(This is another late-night blog that I'm choosing to publish and not delete. I think I might be turning over a new leaf!)

My most common "If only..." right now is probably - If only Liam didn't require me to be in the basement when he is in the playroom then I could get everything done that I want to (finish unpacking, cleaning, cooking, sewing etc). I try to relax and tell myself we'll get there eventually (at least he doesn't require me to be in the playroom with him any more, I just have to be on the same level) and in the meantime it's a good excuse to watch TV :)

Kate- Oh my goodness, yes! This is similar to my if only they were older.... I don't want to wish away their early years, I just wish that I could tell them to play by themselves for a hour or that 5:45 is not an appropriate wake up time.

If only...I had more time in the day, could get an hour more sleep at night, eat three meals a day, drink more water/drink less soda, go shopping and actual try on the clothes before I buy them, I wasn't turning 30 in 15 days!

Have you ever read The Pearl by John Steinbeck? Perfect for showing how getting what you want isn't always the best, and being happy and thankful for the things you have is best!

FYI, this blog topic stemmed from Oprah's 30 Year Old Virgin episode. Weird, yes?

I agree, turning 30 is going to be awesome! I feel like the "OMG I'm turning 30" is more of a "single woman who doesn't want to be" or a "party-girl" type of thing.

If only I had a sewing room (or time to do projects again).
If only we had more money (don't we all do this one?).
If only the baby slept all night long (and the toddler too...).
And I go back and forth on the if only Jillian was older...because then I remind myself that these days of the young ones will be gone soon enough and I quickly take back that "if only".

There are so many "if onlys" daily... right now I'm thinking "if only I had more time/motivation to continue writing" but teaching and politics seem to take up so much time lately. Also, "if only I'd take more time to actually GO to yoga instead of just thinking about it"
